I love these notes. Old school disney animation guides had the same rules for storyboarding and it’s all very very true.

It’s a pretty well-known fact in the fandom that My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is completely out of order. This is most notable in the Grand Galloping Gala trilogy of episodes, which was spread out in season 1 between Episode 3 and the season finale, but there are other hints throughout the series that show this. there’s the fact that the winter episode is placed before the fall, introducing the concept of manually changing the seasons in an episode based around it entirely, before showing the Running of the Leaves where that element is in the background.
One that I find really interesting is Griffin the Brush Off coming immediately after Sonic Rainboom. We know this because of Pinkie Pie, who recounts the climax of Sonic Rainboom at the beginning of Griffin the Brush Off, albeit in an obtuse way. This is very interesting for a number of reasons; the most obvious is showing off how much care and attention was put in to this series. Even these light touches of continuity really cement the show in a cohesive world, and I think is one of the reasons it’s resonated so well with audiences.
However the two episodes, when viewed next to each other shed light on a number of other interesting implications. First, we’ll discuss Gilda. When seen only in Griffin the Brush Off, she comes across significantly more lightly. She had a short-temper, is obsessed with ‘coolness,’ and has a number of other problems but she seems to legitimately want to be Rainbow Dash’s friend in her own possessive way.
In contrast, if Sonic Rainboom does in fact come first it paints Gilda is a much more self-serving right. Gilda, Dash’s former friend from Jr Speedster’s Flight School, decides she wants her as a friend and relies on their acquaintanceship to get it. Why? Because Rainbow Dash had just won he Young Flyer’s competition, and preformed a legendary Sonic Rainboom. Gilda’s interest in Dash comes not out of a legitimate desire for friendship, but to inflate her ego. Dash in this case is her prize, explaining why she’s so possessive of her and immediately hostile to Pinkie Pie for daring to want to spend time with Dash. Gilda’s primary motivation then becomes clear: She cares for nobody else but herself.
there are certain other tidbits of information to be gleaned by watching Sonic Rainboom and Griffin the Brush Off together. Notably you can piece together some of Dash’s past never officially revealed. She as bullied in her tenure at Jr Speedster’s Flight School school by the jocks in Sonic Rainboom, and it can be inferred that she ended up with a delinquent like Gilda as a friend as a result of this. Eventually, she dropped (or was kicked) our of Jr Speedster’s entirely, possibly as a result of her choice of companionship, whereupon she moved to Ponyville. Most of this can be read from individual pieces of information, but it’s much clearer when seen congruently.
Overall the two episodes seem to shed some light on each other, and are quite interesting to watch back to back.
